1.Give a brief introduction of the band, how long you’ve been together, etc.
We formed the band in 2002 when Jerry Clews (drummer) and Dave Henriquez (guitar) sought out collaborators over the internet. While they were in Boston, they found me (Patrick:vocals) in Kansas City and Mike Billa (electronics) in Denmark.
It was a unique arrangement having us all do our respective parts from different corners of the world. But you can’t manufacture chemistry. Fortunately, when we got in a room together, it only got better.
We released our first record “State of Disgrace” in 2004 and busted our asses all over the east coast for a couple years till we got our first tour break with Sevendust. Then was 30 Seconds to Mars, followed by Godsmack.
We recently released our sophomore record, “Dystopia” and first single from it, “Freakshow” which is currently at radio and the video channels.
2.What influences Hourcast musically?
We have wide varying musical tastes in this band. The Boston guys are all about the hardcore. I’m more of an alternative pallet. Together, we are able to make the HourCast sound. With a pinch of both.
I’m personally very motivated by experience as a person and life in general. Whether it’s MY story, one of my band members, or our fans…. I like to write about what I see, feel and touch as a person on this crazy ride we call our lives.
3.What is the meaning behind the new video for “Freakshow?”
I cannot believe that for the last 10+ years we have been tuning into “reality” shows for our entertainment. I think that our lives have become so mundane that we watch these things for a couple of reasons. First, to live a life different than the one we’ve been dealt. Secondly, to feel better about ourselves when we see some of these trainwrecks. It never ceases to amaze me the lengths that people will go to have “celebrity” and a few dollars in their pockets. Nothing is sacred, no subject is taboo. These people have done NOTHING to earn any of the attention that we and the networks are giving them. A wise person once said “you can learn a lot about a society by it’s art”. There are exceptions. I’m not talking about the documentary style shows (ie. Deadliest Catch, etc) because those guys (and girls) are just living their lives and working and existing the best that they can. It’s a glimpse into an INTERESTING life. You know what types of shows I’m talking about. If I was to start a list, I’d finish this interview in about a week. Let’s just say that we are to blame for the unoriginal, lame programming that plasters our airwaves….we are the ones tuning in. We should be ashamed of ourselves.
4.Do you guys have any upcoming touring plans?
We are embarking on a tour with CKY starting Oct 30, 2010. We will be posting dates on all of our websites very soon.
5.You recently released a new album called Dystopia. What was the writing process like for the album?
We all meet up in Boston and woodshed for weeks on end. We try to kick out at least a song a day. We also had some material that we did not release on “State of Disgrace” that we wanted to revisit (Blue and Invisible).
Something interesting we did this time was to work with producers. I would have to say that it was the best/worst experience we’ve ever had as a band. It really makes you take a step back in your writing and your performing and look at a bigger picture. At the same time, it’s only someone else’s OPINION. Those of you that are writers/musicians may think that the “producer” will make or break you. That’s just not true at all. At the end it comes down to YOU. Trusting yourself and having confidence in who you are as an artist.
6.What do you think of the current state of the music industry?
“The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There’s also a negative side.” – Hunter S. Thompson. I will say this to aspiring professionals. It has become a labor of love. The glory days of excess and hendonism have ended. You now must be willing to be motivated only by your desire to create, perform and pursue your art. Expect little to no financial return. I tell young fans all the time, “learn EVERY aspect of this business that you can” Whether it’s recording, mixing, engineering, management, promotion, publishing, law…..know it all. Because chances are, you will have to handle MOST if not all of these duties yourself. Empower yourself to learn every part of this business and FALL IN LOVE with the process.
7.Who would be on your dream tour?
George Carlin would open up the night then we would hit the stage. Deftones would go on next followed by Muse. The reunited Guns n Roses and NIN would wind up the night…That’s going to be my corner bar concert in Heaven. If I make it there…
