Can you please introduce yourself and your role in Hawthorne Heights?
Hello. My name is JT, and I sing and play guitar for Hawthorne Heights. Aside from that, I am also the best basketball player in Hawthorne Heights.
Can you tell me a little bit about your new album Skeletons?
Our new album, Skeletons, is a deeper look into my mind, lyrically. I wrote tons and tons of lyrics for this album and I think it really helped the process. We recorded it in Los Angeles with Howard Benson over a month and a half. We are extremely proud of how everything turned out, and it was hard for us to drop any songs from the record…so we didn’t. You will get 13 unlucky songs that will hopefully help you through your day, or generally start your party.
What songs are you most proud of on the new album and why?
I feel most proud of the song “Boy”, from Skeletons. The entire song is based about growing up without a father. I am a child of divorce, like many others…and this song is about how a situation like that can hurt. I am also really into the song “Gravestones,” because it’s a bit of a departure for HH. We tried to think of this album as a diverse collection, and tried not to repeat ourselves.
How is the new album different from your other releases such as Fragile Future and The Silence In Black And White?
Skeletons is the most musically eclectic out of any Hawthorne Heights record. There are some curve balls on the record, that I hope people can appreciate. We didn’t want to write 13 songs that rock from start to finish…we wanted some audio breathers as well. Micah did some screaming on this record, which he had never done. And I also tried my hand at some more aggressive vocals…
What are your touring plans for the rest of the year? Any summer or fall tours planned?
We are currently putting those plans together right now. We are trying to find a way to have a very cheap ticket price to reward fans for sticking with us. I hope we can come up with something truly unique and special, so that everyone can attend. So far, we are doing some dates with Bayside in late June that will be a lot of fun…can’t wait for those. We should be on tour all throughout the summer, while trying to spread Skeletons across America.
How did you get started playing music?
I started playing guitar in college, because one of my friends had one laying around. It never really interested me early in life, but I have always been a fan of music. My sister got me into some great music while growing up, which I appreciate very much. I set out to become a teacher, and ended up being a singer. Life is winding road.
What are some of your musical influences?
Favorite singer of all time is Steve Perry from Journey. Favorite songwriter of all time is Tom Petty. Favorite band of all time is a 3 way tie with The Beatles, Journey, and Poison. I love any kind of music with a melody to it.
What kind of goals do you have for Hawthorne Heights?
I think that HH has already accomplished way more than we ever could have dreamed. I really hope that we can continue to make music that people can relate to. I want to help people through tough situations, by writing a song about a similar situation that I have went through. I will continue to do that as long as people continue to listen.
Any last words for our readers?
Thanks so much for reading, listening, and watching anything that I have been a part of. I hope that you will all take a listen to Skeletons and come see us play these songs live. Come say hi, I am always available to talk at our shows. Music should be positive. If you don’t like something, move on to find something that you do like.
Keep your head up. Don’t steal. Have a great summer!
